Le misure presenti sulle pareti laterali degli pneumatici sono una sorta di carta d’identità della gomma e contengono tutte le informazioni utili ad una corretta identificazione. Scopriamo insieme il significato delle cifre e delle lettere che compaiono sulla spalla usando come esempio una copertura 205/55 R16 91V.
La larghezza del pneumatico in mm è indicata dalle prime tre cifre che compaiono sulla spalla: 205 = 205 mm = 20,5 cm.
Le due cifre che seguono la larghezza del pneumatico indicano il rapporto percentuale tra l’altezza della spalla e la larghezza della sezione. Se il numero è inferiore a 80 (come quello della gomma che abbiamo usato come esempio) stiamo parlando di una copertura ribassata, super-ribassata se inferiore a 45.
Le due cifre che vengono dopo la lettera R indicano il diametro (altezza) della ruota misurato in pollici: la sigla 16 significa che monta cerchi da 16”.
L’indice di carico del pneumatico è identificato dalle ultime due cifre sulla spalla ed è un codice riferito alla massima capacità di carico (in kg). Un indice di carico 91 come quello della gomma usata come esempio significa che il pneumatico può sostenere un peso di 615 kg.
L’ultima lettera della sigla presente sulla spalla del pneumatico indica il codice di velocità, cioè la velocità massima raggiungibile dalla gomma con pressione di gonfiaggio corretta e utilizzata sotto carico. La lettera V, ad esempio, indica che la copertura è omologata per raggiungere i 240 km/h.
